Bill's Opinion: Workout America – Fitness Defined

To define and clarify the rationale for our unique training principles at WorkOut America it is important to first understand the broad goals of training.

Many of our participants will fall into a general health and fitness track. These folks would like to drop ten or twenty pounds, maybe reduce blood pressure or cholesterol, and just generally look better and feel better while improving their health status. Many of our clients are recreational athletes who are interested in not only health benefits but increased facility as a surfer, skier, runner, golfer or tennis player. These individuals certainly have higher than average performance aspirations and higher cosmetic goals and expectations associated with increased strength, muscularity and reduction of body fat.

It is important though to recognize the distinction between these goals and those of our competitive athletes, and we deal with many, many elite international and world class professional athletes, as well as serious high school athletes.

Health and wellness end where competition begins.

Athletes are individuals at risk.

A gladiator mentality prevails.

Looking Fit Does Not Equal Healthy
While professional football players may have a very high level of fitness there is certainly nothing healthy about two three hundred pound players running into each other head first at full speed. On a similar vein the body images presented in many popular magazines that feature professional bodybuilders or fitness girls, promote an unrealistic body image based on competitive athletes, who are photographed in contest condition. Almost all of these physique competitors universally rely on drugs; various steroids, as well as growth hormone, IGF-1, insulin, diuretics, cosmetic surgeries and extreme and questionable dietary practices to achieve that look. Again certainly not healthy endeavors when pursued to these extremes.

While health may be described as the absence of disease it certainly encompasses much, much more. And certainly becomes more of a dynamic, when viewed in the context of wellness, where our goals are robust physical, emotional and spiritual wellbeing.

The American College of Sports Medicine defines fitness as an appropriate facility in five areas:

* Muscular strength
* Muscular endurance
* Flexibility or range of motion
* Cardio respiratory efficiency
* Body composition

Here at Workout America we would expand this further to include the criterion we expect proficiency in from our athletes. So we would add these elements to our list of fitness goals as well :

* Balance
* Reaction
* Acceleration
* De-acceleration
* Agility
* Strength and Power

Training Customized to Your Goals and Capacity
We train all our clients young, old or athletic to their individual capacity in a dynamic athletic model. For many Americans obesity, metabolic deterioration and disuse atrophy have reduced our physical capabilities to the point where to just deal with the physical challenges of every day life is a struggle. When you can’t stand up from the toilet or climb stairs or take out the trash, then for you every day is Superbowl Sunday.

At WorkOut America our goal is to help every individual reach their highest potential of health, happiness, and fitness.
